چکیده

Most afforestation hardwood plantations in the Central Hardwood Forest Region, USA, are established with bareroot seedlings planted in late winter or early spring. This brief planting season is preferred for several logistical and physiological reasons, yet interest in fall planting has increased as a means to extend the planting season. We evaluated effects of a wide range of planting dates on 2-year survival and growth for six different temperate deciduous forest tree species grown as 1 + 0 bareroot stock at a southern Indiana, USA, nursery and outplanted onto an afforestation site in southeastern Indiana. In 2001–2002 and again in 2002–2003, seedlings were planted on 10 and 9 different planting dates, respectively, between November and July. Planting date only affected survival of Prunus serotina Ehrh. and Juglans nigra L. in 2001–2002, and Liriodendron tulipifera L. in 2002–2003. Planting date did not consistently affect seedling growth of any species; however, low precipitation in summer of 2002 apparently limited growth of late season plantings. These results suggest that the planting season could effectively be extended given adequate soil moisture. # 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Impact of forest vegetation on soil characteristics: a correlation between soil biological and physico-chemical properties

Temperate and dry deciduous forest covers major portion of terrestrial ecosystem in India. The two forest types with different dominant tree species differ in litter quality and root exudates, thereby exerting species-specific impact on soil properties and microbial activity. This study aims to examine the influence of forest type or dominant tree species on soil physico-chemical properties and...

Influence of spring phenology on seasonal and annual carbon balance in two contrasting New England forests.

Spring phenology is thought to exert a major influence on the carbon (C) balance of temperate and boreal ecosystems. We investigated this hypothesis using four spring onset phenological indicators in conjunction with surface-atmosphere CO(2) exchange data from the conifer-dominated Howland Forest and deciduous-dominated Harvard Forest AmeriFlux sites. All phenological measures, including CO(2) ...

Branch Wood Decomposition of Tree Species in a Deciduous Temperate Forest in Korea

Woody debris, which is supplied by branch litter, is an important component of forest ecosystems as it contains large quantities of organic matter and nutrients. We evaluated changes in branch wood dry weight and nutrient content of six common species (Fraxinus rhynchophylla, Pinus densiflora, Prunus sargentii, Quercus mongolica, Acer pseudosieboldianum, and Symplocos chinensis for. pilosa) in ...

The contribution of interspecific variation in maximum tree height to tropical and temperate diversity

Maximum height was assessed for tree species from seven temperate deciduous forests, one subtropical forest and one tropical forest and combined with published tree heights for three other tropical forests. The temperate deciduous forests showed a strong concentration of canopy species and a dearth of subcanopy species. In contrast, the four tropical forests showed more uniform distributions of...

Effect of transplanting and seed hydropriming on grain yield of maize (Zea mays L.) as second crop in temperate region of Kermanshah, Iran

To save water, get suitable establishment, shorten growth duration and increase grain yield of maize, this experiment was conducted as split plot factorial arrangement in randomized complete block design with three replications at Mahidshat research station (Kermanshah, Iran) in 2017 and 2018 growing season. Two planting dates (10th  and 20th  of July) were assigned to main plots, and a combi...
